My experiences without a vehicle in San Francisco made me realize that really BART is for getting into the city. Once you're in the city, you need to use the various MUNI transport options (these are the buses mostly, but there are also some streetcar-type things in certain locations). My favorite thing to do (although in terms of getting you from point A to point B efficiently it is pretty useless) is ride the cable cars. So spiffy! And they were invented because the town is so hilly that on the downhills, carriages would sometimes go faster than the horses pulling them, leading to dead and injured horses. But they're mostly ridden by tourists, and mostly just go to the touristy areas, and not very far at that, so they're less than useful in most situations.
