frustrated in san francisco
Today was the second day that my plans were frustrated by public transportation. I think there are a few things going on here. One is that I refuse to believe SF and Berkeley are two different cities. They are connected by BART, therefore they must be one metropolitan area, so I believe. This is apparently untrue, as it takes a ridiculous amount of time to get from one to the other. Also, I expect the BART to be like the T in Boston or the Metro in DC. It isn't. The basic difference, insofar as I can tell, is that the BART sucks. Lindsay tells me it is more like a commuter rail. There don't seem to be many stops in the city. For instance, none near Golden Gate Park. What's with that? Anyway, the end result was that we missed the ballet which I was really really excited about seeing, and that made me sad. And the bluegrass festival was also disappointing, because I missed the two artists I wanted to see, and the one we did see, while very good, was not bluegrass. (Gillian Welch.) Also, it was insanely insanely crowded, and we couldn't see at all nor hear very well. So that was disappointing. However, the important things were accomplished - namely, seeing Lindsay and [info]8bitnintendo. Still, it was a frustrating day.

So I will remind myself what was accomplished. Lindsay and I went running.

sneaker count: 74 miles

San Francisco is HILLY.

We also went to this amazingly awesome paper store called Flax, where I got some cool stationery. It was an incredible store. All the different kinds of paper! Many I had no idea what I would use for, but still beautiful.

So really not bad, just a bit frustrating. And, if I'm going to be frustrated, I couldn't ask for better company.

Tomorrow is brunch and climbing, I believe. Yay!

My experiences without a vehicle in San Francisco made me realize that really BART is for getting into the city. Once you're in the city, you need to use the various MUNI transport options (these are the buses mostly, but there are also some streetcar-type things in certain locations). My favorite thing to do (although in terms of getting you from point A to point B efficiently it is pretty useless) is ride the cable cars. So spiffy! And they were invented because the town is so hilly that on the downhills, carriages would sometimes go faster than the horses pulling them, leading to dead and injured horses. But they're mostly ridden by tourists, and mostly just go to the touristy areas, and not very far at that, so they're less than useful in most situations.
